Jo Tomsick "A Vow Neglected"
Oil on wood
Raised in a family of extroverted musicians, I was a shy, quiet kid who found escape within books, stories, and imaginary friends. As an adult, making authentic art requires me to cast back and tap into the potential of that unencumbered imagination.
Stories provoke connection by drawing up the narrative threads that are woven into all human experience. Each painting for me is a chance to tug on a thread, and with any luck, discover something vital at its end. I know I’ve succeeded when I feel this ineffable perception pass between me, the work, and my audience. Art is the wordless language that enables me to fully articulate my perspective, and know I’ve been understood.
I approach oil painting academically, but always leave room to experiment. Dramatic lighting and dynamic composition unify the narrative of each piece. Working in layers allows me to coax my thematic elements to life while lending the work a dreamlike quality.
